Hidden in the quiet mountains of Lahaul lies a place where time slows down and every view feels calm and pure. Visiting the Kardang Monastery feels like stepping into a world shaped by Buddhist traditions, ancient stories, and serene Himalayan landscapes an experience often included in a well-curated Spiti valley tour package. Situated opposite Keylong on the far bank of the Bhaga River, the Kardang monastery altitude is approximately 3,500 metres, which provides the viewers with clear mountainous views and cool weather. Travellers come here not just to admire the scenery, but to experience the warm hospitality of the locals, the deep sense of peace, and the chance to slow down and connect with the timeless beauty of this Himalayan region.

Kardang Monastery History

The Kardang Monastery is almost 900 years old, and it is a part of the Drukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. The gompa is situated above the Bhaga River, and it was once the spiritual centre of the area. Over time, it fell into ruin, but it was restored by Lama Norbu Rinpoche in 1912 and brought back to life. The monastery is famous today because of its ancient murals, sacred relics and a colossal collection of scriptures. The Kardang Monastery history also reveals the way of the monks and nuns coexisting as a community in this Monastery,  making it a significant cultural centre.

Kardang Monastery Location and Timings

The Kardang Monastery is situated in the quiet village of Kardang, only across the Bhaga River from Keylong in the Lahauli of Himachal Pradesh. The Kardang Monastery location makes it easy to spot from the town, as it sits on a sunny slope facing the valley. The monastery is normally open in the morning until late afternoon, with the majority of travellers visiting the monastery between 9 AM and 5 PM.

The ideal period to visit Kardang Monastery is from May to October since the roads are open and the weather is pleasant. Throughout these months, the valley is full of life with the sunshine, the green fields, and the clean views of the mountains.
