What Makes Pin Valley Spiti Special

Pin Valley is located in the cold desert region of Himachal Pradesh, which is a part of the larger Spiti Valley. The Valley is famous for the Pin Valley National Park, which is home to rare animals such as the snow leopard, ibex and the Himalayan blue sheep. The valley is surrounded by high mountains and gets very little rain. This makes it appear dry yet magical. The valley has small villages with mud houses, ancient monasteries such as Kungri and green peas and barley fields that make the valley so special. The Pin River runs through it, adding life to this quiet and remote land. Here is some quick information about the valley before you plan your trip.

  • Location & Area: lies in the Lahaul & Spiti district

  • Pin Valley Altitude & Ecosystem: Ranges from 3,500 m to over 6,000 m; has rugged landscapes, rare plants and tough weather

How to Reach Pin Valley Spiti

To know how to reach Pin Valley, start with where it connects best. There are 2 main routes- either through Kaza or via Shimla or Manali. From Kaza to Mudh, the last road point, the distance is about 32 km to Attargo Bridge, then roughly 22 km on an unpaved mountain road to Mudh. The Mudh Village signals the entry to the valley. Vehicles and local jeeps can take you from Kaza to Pin Valley. However, the road becomes narrow and rough beyond Attargo. If you're wondering about how to reach Pin Valley from Delhi, you can fly into Bhuntar Airport or Shimla. Then you can take a bus or taxi to Kaza before heading to Mudh.

By Air

The nearest airport is Kullu Manali Airport in Bhuntar, about 250 km from Kaza. Bhuntar Airport (Kullu-Manali) connects mainly to Delhi and Chandigarh with limited flights. Delhi is thus the most reliable option for those heading to Pin Valley. From here, buses and taxis are available to reach Pin Valley.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Shimla, nearly 445 km from Kinnaur. Shimla is connected by the Kalka-Shimla toy train, with Kalka linked to Delhi and Chandigarh by broad-gauge rail. From Shimla, buses and taxis take you towards Kaza and then to Pin Valley.

By Road

Many travellers prefer road travel. From Delhi, you can reach Pin Valley either via Manali, Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass or via Shimla, Reckong Peo, Nako and Tabo to Kaza and then Mudh.
