The Story Behind Nohkalikai Falls

The Nohokalikai Falls story is as haunting as it is heartbreaking. A long time ago, there was a Khasi woman called Ka Likai who lived in a small village close to Cherrapunji. She was a young widow who had a baby daughter and she was a working woman, making a living by collecting and selling forest produce on a daily basis. Life was not easy for her and so she got remarried hoping that her new husband will take care of her daughter. But the man became jealous of the love that Ka Likai had for her child.

One day when she went away in the forest, he did something unimaginable. He murdered the little girl out of anger and jealousy and cooked her meat for lunch. When Ka Likai returned home, he served her the meal. She ate it, unaware of the horror. Later, when she couldn't find her daughter anywhere and was looking for her, she discovered tiny fingers in a betel nut basket. Ka Likai realised the truth and was devastated and heartbroken. She lost her desire to live and out of grief, she ran to the edge of the cliff and threw herself into the abyss. Since then, the waterfall has been named as Nohkalikai, which means the Leap of Likai.

Best Time to Visit Nohkalikai Falls

It passes through thick forest, slippery rocks and scenic ridges, opening to breathtaking views of the valley below. It takes around 2 hours downhill, ending at a serene turquoise pool right at the base of the waterfall. It is always advisable to hire a local guide because the route can be pretty tricky, but well worth it for an unmatched experience.

3. Souvenir and Snacks Shopping from Local Stalls

After admiring the waterfall, take a leisurely walk to the small local market near the viewpoint. Lined by bamboo huts and selling homemade handicraft items, shawls and wooden souvenirs which reflect Khasi art, you can try local fruits, sour pickles, or roasted corn and engage in conversations with affable vendors. • Avoid Littering: Nohkalikai is one of Meghalaya’s most pristine natural sites. Respect its beauty by carrying your waste back and keeping the surroundings clean

  • Check Weather Update: Unpredictable rain without any prior signs is common in Meghalaya. Before heading out, check the forecast and avoid travelling during heavy showers

  • Explore places to visit nearby: Take in nearby wonders such as Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave and Eco Park for added memories of your trip

  • Stay Hydrated and Carry Snacks: There are a few local stalls near the viewpoint, but it's always smart to carry your own water and light snacks for the journey
