History of Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery was constructed in the mid 15th century by Palden Zangpo who was a follower of Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa ( Yellow Hat ) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is one of the biggest monasteries of Ladakh having 12 stories comprising of temples, prayer halls and rare Buddhist scriptures. The statue of Maitreya Buddha, 49 feet in height, which the monastery is most famous for, was constructed in the monastery in honour of the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama. Thiksey Monaster history is of a spiritual centre and a place that represents the true Ladakhi culture and tradition.
