Phuktal Monastery, also called Phuktal Gompa, is a 12th-century Buddhist monastery founded by Tibetan Buddhist scholar and lama Geshe Kunga along the Tsarap River. It is believed by the locals that Jetsum Shakya Shri a Buddhist scholar and meditator from Kashmir came here to meditate and his meditative practices and teachings have attracted many followers to this area, leading to the creation of Phuktal Monastery.

Phuktal is a Tibetan word where phug means cave and tal means mouth translating to the "Cave of Buddha". The monastery originated from a natural cave on a cliffside which was used by Buddhist practitioners to meditate and to do their practices.

Phuktal Monastery is a part of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism which has drawn monks, scholars, and pilgrims over centuries. The monastery is home to ancient scriptures, beautiful paintings, and statues, making it a spiritual and historical retreat.
