Chembra Peak Trek: A Journey to Wayanad’s Heart-Shaped Lake

Some places make you stop, look around, and feel like you're in a different world. The Chembra Peak Trek in Kerala, Wayanad is one of those places. You can't help but wonder what's at the top as you walk through the soft green hills. The path changes as you walk the trail,  sometimes it's quiet, and other times it's wild. Every turn is a little surprising.

People don't just come here to hike; they come to feel like they're chasing something hidden in the clouds. The more you walk, the more you want to discover the heart-shaped lake, the misty views, and the calmness that everyone talks about. For many travellers, this experience becomes a highlight of their Kerala holiday package, adding a touch of adventure to their trip. In this blog, we will cover all the details about the Chembra Peak Trek, including the ideal season, route breakdown, difficulty level, permits, and timetables that you need to know before starting your journey.

About Chembra Peak Trek

There are times when every step on the Chembra Peak Trek feels like a quiet find. Wayanad has soft, green trails that lead to mountains. As you walk, the mountains slowly open up around you. There are tea gardens, small streams, and a mist that moves like a thin white sheet all around the trail. What makes this trek special is the way the scenery keeps changing, sometimes calm, sometimes wild, but always beautiful.

In Wayanad, Chembra is the highest hill. The hike gives you a chance to see the famous heart-shaped lake, which is also known as Hridaya Saras. It's said that getting to this lake after a long climb feels like a prize, especially when the clouds float slowly across the water. Even though the peak isn't fully open to the public yet, the path up to the lake is still very beautiful.

There are friendly people along the Chembra Peak trekking route, and it is quiet and full of little surprises, like birds singing from hidden spots, cool breezes blowing through the trees, and views that suddenly take your breath away. It doesn't feel like much of a task, more like a relaxing stroll through the quiet side of nature.

Chembra Peak Trek Distance & Duration

The first part of the hike is easy and goes through tea plantations. As you get closer to Hridaya Saras, the lake in the shape of a heart, the climb gets a little steeper. Many hikers take breaks to enjoy the cool breeze, look at the beautiful scenery, or listen to the silence of the hills. This means that the chembra peak trekking time changes a lot. The Chembra Peak Trek distance feels more like a relaxing nature walk than a lengthy trek. There are wide views from the forest and gentle slopes in between. For most, it turns into a trip where both the climb and the finish line are satisfying in their own ways.

Distance: 7 Km

Trek Duration: 5-6 Hours

Chembra Peak Trek Timings

There are tight rules about the Chembra Peak Trek timings. They can only go in the morning. The main reason for this is safety; the forest service wants hikers to finish the trail and return before it gets really foggy in the afternoon.

The official visiting hours are the same throughout the week. The entrance gate opens at 7 a.m., but the hiking time is from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Climbers have to start before noon because after that time, no one can start the trip. This will make sure you have enough time to get to the famous view point of the heart-shaped lake and get back safely.

Timings: 7:00 AM- 5:00 PM

Chembra Peak Trek Entry Fee & Ticketing Details

You need to buy a ticket at the Forest Check Post before you start the Chembra Peak Trek.  Tickets are available only at the official Chembra Forest Check Post (Mepaddi Forest Office). Online booking is not available, so all trekkers must book on the spot. The fee keeps track of how many hikers come each day and helps protect the forests and animals near Chembra.  Tickets are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is always better to reach early in the morning. It feels like the real trip has started when you get your ticket at the counter.

Entry Fee:

  • ₹50 per person for Indians

  • ₹100 per person for Foreign Nationals

  • ₹4,000 trekking charges for Indians (for a group of up to 5 people)

  • ₹8,000 trekking charges for Foreign Nationals (for a group of up to 5 people)

Chembra Peak Trek Difficulty Level

The Chembra Peak Trek difficulty level is generally considered easy to moderately tough. This means that most first-timers can easily finish it with some patience and a steady pace. The trail starts out easy, but as you go higher, it gets harder. This is especially true near the famous lake, where the path gets narrow and rocky. While trekking to Chembra Peak, you will also walk through some forest and some open grasslands. This makes the trip feel smooth and satisfying instead of tiring.

The constant climb uphill is what makes the trip hard for most people. But the path is clearly marked, forest rangers show people the way, and the peaceful scenery keeps your mind clear the whole time.  The climb is fairly easy to handle if you take short breaks, drink water, and wear good shoes.  Many first-time trekkers say that the thrill of reaching the top makes the work feel easier than they thought it would be. This is why the Chembra Peak Trek is great for people who want to try an adventure for the first time.

Chembra Peak Trek Route (Step-by-Step)

The Chembra Peak Trek goes from the foothills of Wayanad up a clear, beautiful trail that leads to a special lake and the upper views. The path is easy to follow, but each part feels a little different. This makes the hike exciting and full of new things to find. Here is a simple, step-by-step map of the route to help you picture the whole trip:

1. Start Point: Forest Service Checkpoint

The start of your hike is close to the Chembra Peak Ticket Counter, where you can buy passes and sign up. From here, you have to take a short car ride to get to the Forest Department Checkpost, which is where the trail officially begins. The tea plantations, fresh air, and cool morning air around this area make it a great place to start a trip.

2. Checkpoint to First Ascent Through Tea Plantations

The trail goes up slowly after the checkpoint, passing through green tea fields. This part is easy, pretty, and great for warming up. Along the way, you'll see some small rocky areas, misty lookouts, and well-kept tea bushes. This area is often loved by photographers because it is so quiet.

3. Tea Plantations to Grassland Entry Point

When you leave the tea fields behind, the land changes into huge, rolling grasslands all of a sudden. This is where the real start of the trip is. It gets harder, but it's still doable, and it's fun to feel the cool wind blow through the tall grasses. It gets more exciting when you can see the peak in the distance.

4. Grasslands to (Hridaya Saras / Heart Lake)

A lot of people like this part of the trip. You can follow the trail through golden and green grassy hills until you reach the beautiful unique lake, which is known as Hridaya Saras. This is the best part for most hikers. People often stop here for longer breaks and pictures because the lake is peaceful and the views are beautiful.

5. Heart Lake to Upper Trails (Final Stretch)

For safety and environmental reasons, the Forest Department has put limits on hiking past Heart Lake and up to the peak right now. You can, however, walk a short distance up on the allowed stretch to get better views, cool breezes, and big pictures of Wayanad's hills and valleys. The view is worth it even if you don't make it to the top.

Best Time to Visit Chembra Peak

From September to March, when the weather stays cool and comfortable, is the best time to visit Chembra Peak. The whole trail goes bright green after the rainy season. The air is fresh, and the views of Wayanad's valleys are at their most beautiful. This is the best time to go on a hike because it's not too hot and the trails aren't too wet.

From December to February, winter is a beautiful time. In the morning, there is fog and a light breeze, which makes the hike feel easier and more relaxed. Now is the best time to plan your trip to Chembra Peak if you like clear skies, calm weather, and quiet roads. Heavy monsoon rains make the road unsafe from June to August, so don't go during those months. The trek is often limited during those months.

How to Reach Chembra Peak Trek Starting Point

The starting point of the Chembra Peak Trek is located near Meppadi in Wayanad, Kerala. The route is easy to follow, and most travellers say the journey itself feels calm and scenic, with tea estates on both sides. The trek begins at the Chembra Peak Forest Office, where visitors must take an entry pass before heading forward.

By Road

Meppadi is well connected by road. You can drive or hire a taxi from Kalpetta (about 10 km away). The road to the forest office climbs gently through plantations, and it feels peaceful when you move past the greenery. Autos and jeeps are also available from Meppadi town. Regular KSRTC buses run from Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery, and nearby towns to Meppadi. From the Meppadi bus stand, you can take a jeep to reach the forest office. Jeeps are the easiest option because private vehicles are not always allowed beyond a point.

By Train

There is no railway station in Wayanad. The nearest major stations are the Kozhikode Railway Station which is 85 km and the Kannur Railway Station which is about 120 km. From either station, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Kalpetta or Meppadi.

By Air

The closest airport is Calicut International Airport (Kozhikode), about 95 km away. Once you land, you can take a cab to Wayanad. The road journey is smooth and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, passing through beautiful Western Ghats landscapes.

Tips for Chembra Peak Trek

1. Start early in the morning

Starting early allows you to enjoy the climb more easily because the Chembra Peak trail gets warmer over the day. Additionally, morning light improves photos and makes the views clearer.

2. Keep plenty of water on hand.

Keep at least 1-2 liters with you because there are no refill stations along the way. Drinking enough of water facilitates the ascent, particularly in the vicinity of the steep parts.

3. Wear good walking shoes

The path can be rocky and slippery at a few sections. Wearing the right shoes improves your grip and boosts your self-confidence.

4. Keep a copy of your ID available.

Before beginning the hike, you must present identification at the forest checkpoint. You won't be allowed entry without it.

5. Avoid leaving trash on the path.

A protected forest area includes Chembra Peak. Take your trash back with you to maintain a clean trail.

6. Be mindful of the hiking boundaries

Only Heart Lake is accessible to trekkers. For safety and conservation reasons, the forest department has limited access, so don't try to go beyond.

7. Before you leave, check the weather.

The hike may get slick due to heavy rain, particularly in the area of the grasslands. Planning the ideal day for your climb is made easier with a fast weather check.

8. Book your trek early during weekends

In Wayanad, Chembra is a well-liked hike. You can avoid lengthy lines at the checkpoint by making reservations in advance.

Conclusion

One of those treks that remains with you long after you've completed it is the Chembra Peak Trek. Chembra Peak offers you something unique whether you are trekking for fitness, adventure, or simply to have fun during the weekend. Every step is worthwhile because of the huge mountains around you, the peaceful forest sounds, and the fresh air.  Additionally, when you return to the base, you come with a sense of peacefulness that can only be found in nature. The Chembra Peak Trek is a must-do if you're searching for a soothing hike. For anyone who wishes to re-establish a connection with nature, even for a single day, it is satisfying in its own way.
