Karni Mata Temple: All You Need to Know

Just imagine walking through a world where myths live, piety hangs in the air, and every nook and cranny echoes a story. Feels very sacred, right? That is the beauty of the Karni Mata Temple, one of the most peculiar and holy places in Rajasthan. This temple is known for sacred rats and the blessings of a mighty goddess, and thus, the experience here is quite surprising, memorable, and very spiritual.

Whether you are curious or very religious, the atmosphere of this place hugs you like the warm wind of the desert, mysterious, homely, and full of wonders. As soon as you enter, you are connected with something old yet alive. This guide will allow you to explore the temple comfortably and enjoy every moment of your trip if you are planning to pay a visit here through the Rajasthan tour package.

History and Story of Karni Mata Temple

The Karni Mata Temple history is a story of devotion, miracles and centuries-old faith that is still living in every nook of Deshnoke. Karni Mata was thought to have been an incarnation of Goddess Durga who lived in the 14th century as a warrior as well as a saint who blessed kingdoms, saved her people, and led them with unequalled spiritual power. It is believed that she did numerous miracles in her life, and she was greatly respected by the rulers and villagers in Rajasthan.

The best-known story about the temple started when her stepson, Lakshman, drowned in a pond. Karni Mata was heartbroken, and he offered prayers to Yama, the deity of death, to bring him back to life. On his refusal, she said that no one in her family would ever set foot in the realm of Yama. Rather, they would be reborn as the holy rats or “kabbas”, who are presently residing within the temple.

There are now over 25,000 rats that freely roam in the temple and are fed with devotion and are regarded as sacred creatures. It is said that seeing the rare white rat is the luckiest thing ever. It is not just a shrine, but a living legend, where each visitor is a part of a story that is continued through generations.

Best Time to Visit the Karni Mata Temple

Karni Mata Temple is open throughout the year, but the most appropriate time to enjoy its spiritual tranquillity and cultural beauty is between October to March. This is the time of the year when the dry heat of Rajasthan is replaced by cool breezes, travelling is pleasant, and visiting temples is peaceful. The winter mornings are particularly tranquil, the marble floors are cold, the sacred rats run quietly, and worshippers come in gentle silence to get darshan.

Navratri is the best season to visit for those who enjoy colourful festivals. The temple is lit with lamps, the chants are rhythmic, and people come together to worship Karni Mata in traditional ways. The atmosphere is cheerful, joyful, and memorable. The period between April and June can be very hot in summer, and walking barefoot in the temple might not be easy for some of the travellers. Although the monsoon provides some relief, there is a chance of humidity. Altogether, early winter and post-monsoon are the most appropriate times to experience the great combination of favourable conditions, comfortable sightseeing, and the opportunity to observe the divine spiritual atmosphere of the temple at its best.

How To Reach The Karni Mata Temple

The Karni Mata Temple at Deshnoke is well connected to other major towns and cities in Rajasthan, and it is therefore not difficult to reach. The temple is approximately 30 km away from Bikaner, and therefore, the general entry point for travellers.

  • By Road: It is served by frequent buses and taxis that operate between Bikaner, which is only some 30km away.

  • By Train: The closest railway station is Deshnoke Railway Station, which is a short walk away from the temple.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is the Jodhpur Airport (approximately 200 km), where you can get a cab or a bus to Bikaner and then to Deshnoke.

The temple is situated in the very centre of the town of Deshnoke, and it greets the visitors with quiet charm and spiritual energy.

Things to Remember Before Visiting the Karni Mata Temple

There are some important things to remember before you go to the Karni Mata Temple to ensure that you have a better time experiencing the place comfortably and in a peaceful manner.

1. Get Ready to Encounter Thousands of Rats

The Karni Matoi Temple is widely known because of its holy rats, and you would find them everywhere: they run all over the marble floor, feed on bowls of milk, and just lie in the silent corners. This will sound strange to some visitors initially, hence the need to be mentally prepared. Such rats are holy, and an infliction of harm on them is highly prohibited. When you remain calm and just observe them, it becomes interesting and culturally significant.

  • Tip: Walk slowly and try not to step upon them.

2. You Have To Walk Barefoot in the Temple

The first thing is to remove your shoes before you come in. The temple is full of rats, and the floor may contain grains, offerings, and milk. Many visitors wear disposable shoe covers located outside the entrance, but the actual principle is to walk barefoot. This is a sign of honouring the temple.

  • Tip: Go in the morning or in the evening when the floor is colder.

3. Spotting a White Rat is Very Lucky

Among many brown rats, there are a few white rats. The locals believe that they are reborn sons of Karni Mata and that even the sight of one is a blessing. Tourists stand in corners waiting to have a glimpse of them. Even if you cannot spot one, observing the rats and devotees will provide you with a better idea of the spirit of the temple.

  • Tip: White rats tend to roam around the quieter areas of the courtyard.

4. Keep Decency and Respect The Surroundings

Stay calm in the temple since it is a place of worship. The rats are free to move around and thus, do not make a lot of noise, leap unexpectedly, or attempt to send them away. Most locals feel that the rats are a blessing, hence they enjoy the ambience. It is permissible to take photos, but in a mild manner that will not disrupt the rats or the devotees.

  • Tip: It is better not to touch the rats purposely until they come to you.

5. Offerings Should Be Presented Carefully

Milk, sweets, grains, and coconut bowls may be used to feed the saintly rats. In case you have something to give, just give it to the temple staff rather than placing it anywhere on the floor. This not only maintains the area clean but also ensures the rats consume safe food. The other special element of the temple ritual is to watch the rats drink the milk in the big metal bowls.

  • Tip: Purchase the goods from the vendors outside to help locals.
