History and Significance of Maikal Hills

The Maikal Hills have a long and significant history. The tribal groups, such as the Baiga and Gond people, have inhabited this area for many years. They rely on the forests to survive, in terms of food, medicine and life. The hills remain special to this day because of their dances, stories and traditions. There is also spiritual value in the region, as major rivers such as the Narmada and Sone originate in the region. The top of the hill is called Amarkantak, which is well known for its temples and sacred places. The hills are geographically located between the Satpura and Vindhya ranges that form deep gullies, thick forests, and numerous other kinds of animals and plants. The Maikal Hills are serene and clean even today, and thus offer a great destination to nature lovers and travellers.

When one is searching for the location of these hills, they most likely refer to the serene area surrounding Amarkantak. The town is located at the meeting point of Satpura, Vindhya and Maikal ranges, thus forming the most appropriate point of exploration of the region. In case you are thinking of the Maikal Hills height, the hills are between 340 m and 942 m high, with some stretching up to 1000 m. Best Time to Visit Maikal Hills

The Maikal Hills show different beauty in each season, whether it's cool winters, green monsoons, or warm summers. Understanding yearly changes helps you plan a comfortable trip that suits your preferences. Below is a detailed breakdown of each season to help you decide when to visit.

Winter (October to March)

Winter brings the nicest weather to Maikal Hills, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C. The cool air makes walking around really comfortable. Skies stay clear and forests look bright green after the monsoon rains end. This season becomes perfect for sightseeing, forest walks, visiting river sources, and catching sunrise at Sonmuda. Mornings often have beautiful mist drifting through trees. Winter attracts people wanting good weather and peaceful surroundings.

Monsoon (July to September)

Monsoon completely changes how Maikal Hills look. Everything turns deep green, waterfalls rush down with lots of water, and thick mist hangs over valleys creating magical views. Temperatures stay between 20°C to 28°C during these months. The season gives you great chances for photography with cloudy skies and occasional drizzle. Some forest paths get slippery from rain, so taking shorter treks makes more sense. Visit during monsoon if you love intense greenery, flowing rivers, and the peaceful feeling rainy weather brings.

Summer (April to June)

Maikal Hills feel pleasant during summer mornings and evenings, though afternoons heat up. Temperatures usually go from 25°C to 35°C during the day. Mornings and evenings remain cool because of high elevation. This season suits travellers wanting fewer crowds around. Trees turn golden, skies stay clear, and viewpoints provide wide scenery. Sunrise at Sonmuda looks especially beautiful when early light spreads across the valleys below. Plan activities for mornings or evenings to avoid midday heat. Summer suits people wanting quiet, relaxed time away from crowds.
