What You Will Experience On This Trek

At the heart of the Chopta Chandrashila Trek are three experiences that each stand on its own. Together, they make this one of the most complete short treks in the country.

Chopta Bugyal: The Meadow That Starts It All

Chopta itself sits between 2,600 and 2,900 metres and is the base from which the entire trek begins. But calling it just a "base camp" undersells it. The open alpine meadow here, locally called a bugyal, is one of the most undisturbed high-altitude grasslands in Uttarakhand, sitting inside the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and deodar give way to wide open sightlines of the surrounding snow peaks. There are no crowds, no commercial clutter, and no noise. Most trekkers arrive at Chopta and immediately understand why this place earns its comparisons.

  • Best Time To Visit: April to June for rhododendron bloom; October to November for clear skies and open meadow views

  • Location / How To Get There: Accessible by road from Ukhimath and Rudraprayag; the trek begins from the Chopta checkpost

  • Ideal For: All traveller types, including families, couples, senior travellers, and first-time trekkers

Tungnath Temple: The Highest Shiva Temple In The World

Tungnath Temple sits at 3,680 metres above sea level and is not just the highest Shiva temple in the world; it is one of the five Panch Kedar temples of the Garhwal Himalayas, believed to be over 1,000 years old. According to mythology, the Pandavas built this temple at the spot where the arms of Lord Shiva appeared in his bull form. That context matters. This is not a temple you pass on the way to the summit. It is a destination in itself.

  • Best Time To Visit: April to June for clear skies; October to November for sharp visibility

  •  How To Get There: 3.5 km trek from Chopta base; well-marked stone trail

  • Ideal For: Pilgrims, families, first-time trekkers, photography

Chandrashila Summit: 360° Views Of 8 Major Himalayan Peaks

From Tungnath, a steeper climb of roughly 1.5 km takes you to the Chandrashila summit at 4,000 metres. This is where the trek earns its name. The 360-degree panorama from the top includes Nanda Devi (7,817 m, the second-highest peak entirely within India), Chaukhamba, Kedarnath Dome, Trishul, Bandarpunch, Thalaysagar, Dronagiri, and the Gangotri ranges. Few short treks in India offer a combined Garhwal and Kumaon viewshed from a single point.

  • Best Time To Visit: October to November for clearest visibility; December to February for full snow experience

  •  How To Get There: 1.5 km steep climb from Tungnath Temple; the trail is marked but requires good footwear

  • Ideal For: Trekkers seeking a summit experience, photographers, sunrise chasers, adventure travellers

Deoria Tal: The Lake That Reflects The Himalayas

Deoria Tal sits at 2,438 metres, reached by a short 3 km trek from Sari village. The lake is known for one thing that photographs cannot fully prepare you for: a near-perfect reflection of the Chaukhamba peak in its clear water. Many multi-day Chopta itineraries include Deoria Tal as either an opening or closing experience. This is a good stop for families and those who want a slower pace. The forest around the lake is dense with rhododendron and oak, and the walk from Sari is comfortable enough for children and senior travellers.

  • Best Time To Visit: April to June and September to November for the clearest reflections

  • How To Get There: 3 km trek from Sari village, Rudraprayag district

  • Ideal For: Families, photographers, those combining it with the main Chopta Chandrashila trek

Things To Do Around Chopta Beyond The Trek

Chopta rewards those who stay a little longer. The region has enough to fill additional days without repeating the main trail.

Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary

Located close to Chopta, the Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary is a wildlife reserve that protects the endangered Himalayan musk deer. The sanctuary also hosts the Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand, along with several other Himalayan bird species.

Ukhimath And Kalimath Temple Visit

Ukhimath is the winter residence of Lord Kedarnath and Lord Madhyamaheshwar. During the months when high-altitude temples are closed, the deities are ceremonially brought down to Ukhimath for worship. A visit here connects you to the larger Kedarnath pilgrimage circuit without the trek to Kedarnath itself. Kalimath, nearby, is a significant temple dedicated to Goddess Kali and draws devotees from across Uttarakhand.

Stargazing And Sunrise Camping At Chopta Meadows

Chopta has minimal light pollution. On a clear night, the open meadows offer unobstructed skies that are genuinely rare to find this close to Delhi. Many travellers specifically plan an overnight camp at Chopta, not for the trek but for the night sky. Sunsets from Chopta are equally well known; the alpenglow on the surrounding peaks in the last hour of daylight is a different kind of reward. If your schedule allows an extra night, use it here.

Best Time To Do The Chopta Chandrashila Trek

April To June

This is the most popular window for a reason. The trail is lined with red and pink rhododendron in full bloom through April and May.

September To November

Post-monsoon Chopta offers some of the cleanest air and the most reliable summit views of the year. October and November in particular give you cold nights, warm days, and a trail that has largely recovered from the rains.

December To February

The entire Chopta region transforms under snow. The meadows are white, the trail is covered, and the summit experience is dramatically different from any other season.

July To August

Monsoon rains make the mountain roads to Chopta prone to landslides and waterlogging. The trail itself is slippery, and visibility at the summit is poor.

Trek Essentials You Must Know Before You Go

  • Trekking shoes with ankle support and good grip (not running shoes)

  • Thermal base layers and a windproof outer jacket

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a cap

  • Personal medication and a basic first aid kit

  • Reusable water bottle and light snacks for the trail

  • Cash (not cards) for the permit and any on-trail purchases

  • Trekking poles and microspikes if travelling in winter

Why Book Your Chopta Trek With Capture A Trip

What Sets Our Packages Apart From A DIY Trip

As seen on Shark Tank India, we approach travel differently from traditional agencies by focusing on group experiences for young professionals and solo travellers, not just bookings. Instead of waiting for friends to confirm plans, you can join one of our fixed departures where the group is already formed, so the trip goes ahead without last-minute cancellations. Each group is led by a Trip Captain who travels with you as a peer, helping break the ice and keeping the group connected throughout the journey.

At the same time, we keep everything structured behind the scenes by pre-arranging stays, transport, and routes so you don’t have to deal with on-ground uncertainty, especially in the mountains.

What’s in the Package?
  • Accommodation for 2 nights in Homestay / Camps at Chopta.

  • 5 meals will be provided throughout the trip. 2 meals on Day 1 (Lunch + Dinner) + 2 meals on Day 2 (Breakfast + Dinner) + 1 meal on Day 3 (Breakfast).

  • Entire travel as per the itinerary by Tempo Traveler.

  • Guide while Trekking.

  • Experienced trip captain throughout the trip.
