Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

With open roads, clear skies, and moderate temperatures during the day, May to September are considered the best months to visit Spiti Valley. However, the destination is operational throughout the year, and each season offers its own charm. Here is a complete season-wise breakdown to help you pick the best time to visit the Spiti Valley.

Summer (May to June)

The snow begins to melt, revealing lush green valleys, open passes, and pleasant temperatures. This is the busiest time to visit as both the Shimla-Kinnaur and Manali routes are operational. Perfect for sightseeing, trekking, camping, and visiting high-altitude lakes.

Festivals: Buddha Purnima, local monastery festivals.

Places to visit: Chandratal Lake, Key Monastery, Pin Valley National Park.

Things to do: Road trips, high-altitude treks, camping, and village walks.

Monsoon (July to September)

While Spiti lies in a rain-shadow zone and receives minimal rainfall, connecting routes through Himachal may face occasional landslides or roadblocks. This is a quieter time with dramatic skies and fewer tourists.

Festivals: Ladarcha Fair in Kaza (August).

Places to visit: Dhankar Lake, Langza Village, Hikkim, and Komic.

Things to do: Photography, cultural interactions, short hikes, and monastery visits.

Winter (October to April)

The valley transforms into a snow-covered desert. The Manali route is closed, but you can still reach Spiti via the Shimla route. This is the most challenging season, suited for experienced travellers seeking raw adventure.

Festivals: Losar (Tibetan New Year, in February or March).

Places to visit: Kaza and the surrounding villages are accessible in winter.

Things to do: Snow treks, wildlife spotting (including snow leopard), and winter photography.

How to Reach Spiti Valley from Mumbai

Reaching Spiti from Mumbai is an exciting journey that features long-distance travel alongside breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. Since the Spiti Valley does not have its own airport or railway station, travelling there involves a combination of air, rail, and road travel. The most convenient option considered by many travellers is to first reach one of the major North Indian cities, such as Delhi, and then commute to Spiti Valley, mainly by road or by other means via Chandigarh. Let us look at all the possible ways of reaching the Spiti Valley from Mumbai:

By Air

No direct flights operate to Spiti Valley, but you can fly from Mumbai to nearby cities such as Chandigarh, Kullu (Bhuntar Airport), Dharamshala, or Shimla. Most of the time, Chandigarh is considered a better option because of its connectivity, frequent flights, and better accessibility to Spiti via road. Airlines like IndiGo, Vistara, and Air India offer regularly operating flights from Mumbai to Chandigarh. Once you reach Chandigarh, you can hire a taxi or board a bus to travel to Spiti via the Shimla or Manali route.

By Train

There are no direct trains to Spiti Valley. The nearest railway stations are Joginder Nagar and Shimla, with Shimla being the preferred choice due to better connectivity. From Mumbai, you can take a train, such as the Paschim Express or the Goa Sampark Kranti Express, to Chandigarh or Kalka, and then continue by road. You can also sometimes take the famous Kalka-Shimla toy train for a scenic start to the mountain leg of the journey. From these railway stations, taxis and buses are easily available to reach Spiti via the Shimla or Manali routes.

By Road

No matter how you begin your journey, the best way to reach Spiti Valley from Mumbai and the final stretch to Spiti is almost always by road. If you want to cover the entire trip by road, you can embark on a Mumbai to Spiti road trip, which is roughly 2,000–2,100 km and takes around 27-28 hours. However, this is not recommended. Here is the breakdown of the two routes:

It is advised to first reach either Delhi or Chandigarh by either a flight or a train and then cover the further distance by road. The Shimla route remains open for most of the year and allows gradual acclimatisation to high altitudes, while the Manali route is shorter but open only for a few months, typically from late May to early October. Both routes offer stunning views and unforgettable landscapes.
