What Greece Tour Packages From India Cover: Experiences Worth Flying For
Greece has over 6,000 islands, but only 227 are inhabited. The mainland holds the history. The islands hold the magic. A well-planned Greece trip from India combines both. Here is what each major stop delivers and why it earns its place in your itinerary.
Athens
Athens is 3,000 years old and the starting point for almost every Greece itinerary worth planning. It is where democracy was conceived, where the Parthenon still stands on its hilltop, and where the weight of ancient history is genuinely felt rather than just described. The Acropolis draws enormous crowds in peak season; pre-booking timed-entry online is essential, and walk-in queues can stretch for over 2 hours in summer. The city itself is significantly more affordable than Santorini or Mykonos, with a clean metro network and walkable neighbourhoods that reward exploration. The National Archaeological Museum, often skipped in favour of island time, spans 5,000 years of Greece history and is one of the most important collections in the world.
Major highlights about Athens
Best Time To Visit April to early June and September to October for comfortable sightseeing temperatures
How To Reach Athens International Airport is the main entry point for all flights from India; Metro Line 3 connects the airport to the city centre in around 40 minutes.
What to Expect: The Acropolis, Monastiraki flea market, Plaka district, world-class museums, affordable food and transport, and a city that rewards slow walking more than rushed sightseeing
Santorini
Santorini is the reason most Indian couples put Greece on their wishlist. The blue-domed churches of Oia, the caldera views, the volcanic black-sand beaches at Perissa and Kamari, the boat tours to the hot springs, and the wine grown in volcanic soil are not travel cliches. They are genuinely extraordinary experiences. What most travel pages do not cover, caldera-view hotels during peak season can be very expensive, the Oia sunset point draws massive crowds, and early arrival is strongly recommended, and the island is steep with narrow cobblestone paths that require attention for senior travellers or families with young children. For Indian vegetarians, Santorini is the most challenging stop on any Greece itinerary. Options are mainly Greece salad, spanakopita, tiropita, and pizza. Always confirm with the restaurant before ordering soups or stewed dishes, as many are cooked in meat stock.
Major highlights about Santorini
Best Time To Visit Late April to early June and September to mid-October for lower prices, thinner crowds, and still-warm sea temperatures
How To Reach: Domestic flight from Athens (around 45 minutes) or high-speed ferry from Piraeus port (5 to 8 hours depending on vessel type)
What To Expect: Caldera views, blue-domed churches in Oia, volcanic beaches, hot spring boat excursions, wine tastings, and premium pricing across accommodation and dining
Mykonos
Mykonos has two personalities. The first is the one most people see online: glamorous beach clubs, designer boutiques, and nightlife that runs until sunrise. The second is the quieter Mykonos that most packaged tours from India miss, the narrow whitewashed lanes of Mykonos Town, the back-street tavernas, the windmills at sunset, and the beaches in the north that stay calm even in summer. For Indian travellers, Mykonos works best as a short stop rather than a long stay unless the party and beach club scene is specifically what you are after. Vegetarian options in Mykonos Town are more varied than in Santorini, with Greece salads, grilled halloumi, and cheese pastries widely available.
Major highlights about Mykonos
Best Time To Visit: June and September for the sweet spot between good weather and manageable crowds; July and August bring peak pricing and extreme footfall
How To Reach: Domestic flight from Athens (around 40 minutes) or high-speed ferry from Piraeus (2.5 to 5 hours depending on ferry type)
What to Expect: Whitewashed town lanes, iconic windmills, Little Venice waterfront, beach clubs, nightlife options, and a mix of lively and quiet beaches across the island.
Meteora
Meteora is where Byzantine monks built six active monasteries on top of vertical rock pillars that rise hundreds of metres from the valley floor. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it looks like something from a fantasy film and is one of the most visually surreal places in all of Europe. It appears in fewer than 20 per cent of Greece packages sold from India, which is a significant gap in most standard itineraries. The monasteries were built between the 14th and 16th centuries and are still active religious sites today, which means modest dress (covered shoulders and knees for all genders) is required for entry. An overnight stay in the town of Kalambaka at the base is strongly recommended over a rushed day trip from Athens. Morning light at Meteora before the tour buses arrive is a completely different experience.
Major highlights about Meteora
Best Time To Visit April to May and September to October for wildflowers, fewer tourists, and comfortable walking temperatures
How to reach the Scenic train from Athens takes around 4 to 5 hours; it can also be reached by road as part of a mainland route or on a guided excursion from Athens.
What to Expect: Six monasteries perched on rock pillars, a UNESCO-listed landscape, a modest dress code for entry, rotating visiting days per monastery, and a far quieter experience than the islands
Crete
Crete is Greece's largest island and its most complete destination. It has the ancient Minoan Palace of Knossos, one of Europe's oldest Bronze Age settlements, the 16-kilometre Samaria Gorge trail through the White Mountains National Park (open from May to October), long sandy beaches on the south coast, and a food culture that is genuinely distinct from the rest of Greece. Crete is a far better value than Santorini or Mykonos and is one of the best stops on any Greece itinerary for Indian vegetarians. The Cretan diet is heavily plant-based, with dishes like dakos, gigantes, and horta that are naturally meat-free and available across most restaurants.
Major highlights about Crete
Best Time To Visit: May to October for beaches and outdoor activities; the Samaria Gorge is open from early May to late October only
How To Reach: One-hour domestic flight from Athens to Heraklion or Chania; overnight ferry from Piraeus takes around 8 to 9 hours and saves on accommodation cost.s
What to Expect: Ancient ruins at Knossos, the Samaria Gorge hike, long sandy beaches at Elafonisi and Balos, Chania Old Town, varied vegetarian food, and significantly lower pricing than the Cycladic islands
Delphi
Delphi sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus on the Greece mainland and was considered by the ancient Greeces to be the centre of the world. The Temple of Apollo, the ancient theatre, and the stadium here are among the best-preserved archaeological sites in Greece and yet Delphi is frequently left out of standard India-based packages. It works well as a day trip from Athens or as an overnight stop en route to Meteora, and adds genuine historical depth to any mainland-focused itinerary.
Major highlights about Delphi
Best Time To Visit: April to June and September to October for clear skies and manageable temperatures on the mountain slopes
How To Reach: Approximately 180 kilometres northwest of Athens by road; most travellers visit by guided day tour from Athens or on the drive toward Meteora.
What to Expect: Temple of Apollo, ancient theatre with valley views, the Delphi Archaeological Museum, and a stop that feels genuinely off the tourist trail despite its historical significance
Hidden Gems Worth Adding
Beyond the main circuit, Greece has exceptional, lesser-known islands that reward travellers willing to look further. Milos has over 70 beaches, including the white volcanic rock formations at Sarakiniko. Naxos offers authentic mountain villages and calm sandy beaches as a quieter alternative to the Cycladic mainstream. Sifnos is a top choice for food-focused travellers, known for its clay-oven cooking and slow pace. Hydra is a car-free island near Athens where donkeys are the primary transport and the atmosphere is genuinely romantic and unhurried.
Major highlights about the hidden gems
Best Time To Visit: May to June and September to October, when these smaller islands are quieter and more affordable than the peak months
How To Reach: All reachable by ferry from Piraeus (Athens port); Milos and Naxos are on regular Cyclades ferry routes; Hydra is a 90-minute hydrofoil from the port of Piraeus
What To Expect: Volcanic beaches on Milos, authentic village life on Naxos, slow food culture on Sifnos, and a car-free, donkey-commute charm on Hydra that the main islands have long lost
Things To Do in Greece: Experiences That Go Beyond Sightseeing
Greece rewards travellers who plan beyond the major landmarks. These are the activities that define a well-rounded Greece trip, each built for a different kind of traveller.
1. Island Hopping by Ferry
Connecting the Greece islands by ferry is one of the best travel experiences Europe offers. High-speed and overnight ferries run from Athens port (Piraeus) to all major islands from April through October. The sea route from Athens toward the Cyclades passes dozens of smaller islands and gives you a sense of the geography that no domestic flight can match. Booking ferry tickets in advance during peak months is important as popular routes sell out.
Where: Piraeus port in Athens, connecting to Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Naxos, Paros, and beyond
Ideal For: Travellers covering multiple islands who want to experience the journey as part of the trip rather than just a connection
2. Volcano and Hot Springs Boat Tour, Santorini
A half-day boat excursion from Santorini takes you to the active volcanic island of Nea Kameni, where you hike to the crater rim, and then to the warm, orange-tinted hot spring waters of Palea Kameni. The spring water hovers around 35 degrees Celsius. This runs throughout the sailing season and is one of the most genuinely unique experiences anywhere in Greece. Boats depart from Ammoudi Bay and the old port in Fira.
Where: departing from Ammoudi Bay or the old port in Fira, Santorini
Ideal For: Couples and families with older children wanting an active half-day away from the standard sightseeing stops
3. Hiking the Samaria Gorge, Crete
The Samaria Gorge is 16 kilometres long and descends approximately 1,200 metres from the Omalos plateau through the White Mountains National Park to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where a ferry takes you back to the north coast. The gorge is open from early May to late October. The terrain is rocky throughout, so proper footwear is non-negotiable. Most walkers complete the route in 4 to 7 hours, depending on pace.
Where: Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli, western Crete
Ideal For: Adventure travellers and fit hikers wanting at least one proper outdoor experience on their Greece itinerary
4. Exploring Monastiraki and Plaka, Athens
Monastiraki is Athens at its most alive, a flea market neighbourhood packed with ceramics, antique shops, leather goods, and street food stalls selling fresh gyros and loukoumades (honey doughnuts). Plaka, directly below the Acropolis, has some of the best-preserved neoclassical architecture in the city. Together, these two neighbourhoods cover a morning or evening walk that costs nothing to enter and gives you more of the real city than most paid tours.
Where: Monastiraki Square and the Plaka district, central Athens
Ideal For: Shoppers, food lovers, and first-time visitors who want to experience Athens beyond the Acropolis ticket queue
5. Wine Tasting in Santorini
Santorini produces wine from the Assyrtiko grape variety grown in volcanic soil using a basket-weave vine style unique to the island. The result is a mineral, high-acid white wine unlike anything else produced in Greece or Europe. Several wineries along the caldera rim offer tastings with crater views. Tasting sessions are widely available and best booked in the late afternoon to combine the experience with sunset light over the caldera.
Where: Pyrgos village and caldera-rim wineries, Santorini
Ideal For: Wine enthusiasts and couples looking for a refined evening activity beyond the Oia sunset crowds
6. Visiting the Oracle Site at Delphi
Delphi was considered by the ancient Greeces to be the literal centre of the world. The Temple of Apollo, the ancient theatre, and the stadium are some of the best-preserved sites in Greece. Most travellers visit as a day trip from Athens or as an overnight stop on the way to Meteora. It is frequently left out of India-based packages despite being one of the most historically significant stops in the country. The museum on site is excellent and takes around two hours to cover properly.
Where: Delphi, approximately 180 kilometres northwest of Athens on the mainland
Ideal For: History enthusiasts and travellers wanting to go beyond the standard Athens and islands formula

Who Should Book a Greece Package
Couples and Honeymooners
Santorini delivers what very few destinations in the world can match: caldera-view hotels, private infinity pools, sunset dinners on a terrace, and boat tours to the volcano hot springs. A Greece honeymoon covering Athens and Santorini is, per experience delivered, comparable to or cheaper than a Maldives trip of similar duration when planned right. Book caldera-view properties in Oia well in advance, as they sell out months ahead of peak season.
Families With Children or Senior Parents
Greece works well for multi-generational families when the itinerary is built carefully. Meteora and Crete are the two most family-friendly stops, visually extraordinary, moderately walkable, and far easier to navigate than the steep cobblestone terrain of Santorini. For families with senior members who have mobility concerns, prioritise Athens, Crete, and Meteora over the island circuit.
Groups and Friend Squads
Island hopping by ferry is a social experience by design; shared beach days in Crete or Mykonos are genuinely enjoyable for larger groups, and Athens has enough variety in food and evening options to keep groups engaged for several days. We handle group accommodation, transport, and coordination as a single package, so you are not managing logistics across multiple vendors.
Who Should Reconsider
Greece is not the right trip if budget is the primary constraint. The Schengen visa, indirect flights from India, and premium pricing on Santorini and Mykonos in peak season make this a mid-to-premium international trip. Families travelling with toddlers under three should also note that ferry journeys and the steep island terrain in Santorini and Mykonos can be genuinely difficult to navigate with young children.
Best Time to Visit Greece From India
Peak Season (June to August)
Hottest and most expensive. The sea is at its warmest, ideal for swimming and beach time. Hotel rates on Santorini and Mykonos peak significantly, the Acropolis is very crowded, and ferries around the August 15 national holiday must be booked months in advance. If travelling in peak season, secure accommodation and ferry bookings well ahead of departure.
Shoulder Season (April to May and September to October)
Our strongest recommendation for Indian travellers. Temperatures are comfortable for both sightseeing and beach time. Hotel rates drop noticeably compared to peak season. The sea in September is still warm enough to swim. May is particularly good for mainland destinations like Athens, Delphi, and Meteora. Ferries run regularly without the August rush.
Off Season (November to March)
Most island resorts and ferry connections reduce or stop entirely on smaller islands. Athens, however, is excellent in winter the Acropolis and museums are open, accommodation rates drop significantly, and the city is genuine and unhurried. Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu remain partially functional. This window works best for budget-conscious culture travellers with no interest in beaches.
Travel Essentials for Indian Passport Holders
Schengen Visa
Indian passport holders require a Schengen Type C short-stay visa to enter Greece. Apply at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure through the GVCW visa application centres in India. Processing typically takes 15 to 25 working days. One Schengen visa covers all 29 Schengen member countries, so a combined Greece and Italy or France trip requires only one application.
Key Documents Required
Valid Indian passport with at least 3 months validity beyond the intended stay and 2 blank pages
Completed Schengen visa application form and two recent passport-size photographs
Confirmed return flight tickets and hotel bookings for all nights of stay
Travel insurance with a minimum of 30,000 euros medical coverage across all Schengen countries
Bank statements for the past 3 months and income proof, such as salary slips or income tax returns
Cover letter explaining the purpose and duration of travel with a day-by-day itinerary
Currency and Daily Costs
Greece uses the Euro. Cards are accepted widely in Athens and on major islands. Carry some cash for small tavernas, local markets, and town transport. Always choose to be charged in euros at ATMs to avoid unfavourable dynamic currency conversion rates.
Budget tier Guesthouse stays, street food, public transport, and low-cost sightseeing
Mid-range tier 3-star hotel, two restaurant meals per day, one activity or excursion
Premium tier 4 to 5-star accommodation, caldera views, private transfers, fine dining
Vegetarian Food in Greece
Greece is manageable for Indian vegetarians with preparation. Reliable vegetarian dishes include Greece salad, spanakopita (spinach and feta pie), tiropita (cheese pie), fava dip, gemista (stuffed tomatoes or peppers), gigantes (baked beans), grilled halloumi, and dakos in Crete. Always tell the restaurant you are a vegetarian eimai hortofagos in Greece. Ask specifically about soups and stewed dishes, as many are cooked in meat or chicken stock, even when described as vegetable-based. Athens and Crete are the most accommodating stops. Santorini is the most limited.
Getting to Greece From India
There are no direct flights from India to Greece. Every route involves at least one layover. The Gulf route via Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad is the most popular and most affordable option for Indian travellers. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is a practical option for travellers from northern India. Book international flights before accommodation, particularly for summer travel.
